Unable to pick a single thing to be amazing at, John splits his time in far more directions than could possibly be wise. He works primarily as a food and portrait photographer, but also practices digital sculpting, 3D printing, writing, painting tiny toys, and growing a variety of carnivorous plants. His biggest disappointment in life is that he hasn’t managed to turn his struggle with mental health into an award-winning Netflix original biopic, but he settles for small goals, like learning how to bake scones.
In 2017 John Dearing gradated from the MFA Photography program at Lesley University. He obtained a BFA in Photography and a minor in Art History from East Carolina University in 2009. After graduating from ECU, John moved home to Charlotte, NC where he taught adult and youth courses in photography and photo-editing at The Light Factory and other local art centers. He was also an adjunct professor at Winthrop University, teaching both film and digital photography.
Aside from teaching, John spends a great deal of time investigating photo-chemical processes, and blogging about the results. His work centers around the mixture of science and art. John has been exhibited in several states, in both solo and group shows. Before leaving Charlotte, he was one of the artists selected to receive a grant as part of the Community Supported Arts project run by the Arts and Science Council of Charlotte-Mecklenburg.
John doesn't know why artists usually write their statements and bio's in the third person, but he finds it oddly relaxing and is willing not to question convention in this.
If you want to contact John, he would be thrilled to hear from you. He can be reached via his Blog, on Flickr or by email at dearing.john@gmail.com
